"The most awesome/awful thing that has happened to you while knitting (or crocheting) in public" Contest!

I want to hear a story about the most awesome or awful thing that has happened to you while you were knitting or crocheting in public. It doesn't have to be recent, it can be from whenever. It doesn't have to be something knitting (or crochet) related that happened, just something that you think is awesome or awful that happened WHILE you were knitting or crocheting.
Email your story to

I'm sure you want to know what the winner gets, huh? Well, the 3 grand prize winners will receive a skein of Oink Pigments Sock in the colorway of their choice. And 5 runner-ups will get a keychain skein in the colorway of their choice.

There are only 2 rules: One submission per person and all submissions must be received by February 14, 2011 at 11:59pm PST.

Have fun! and good luck to everyone! I'm looking forward to reading the stories!

  1. I knit everywhere I go. Even bars. I'm used to getting stared at, asked questions about what I'm doing etc, but the weirdest one are like hte following.

Whilst sitting at a bar, with a PBR (that's Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, for those of you not in the know) and a rocks glass of whiskey (neat, of course!), some random person came over with a huge smile on their face, put their hand on my abdomen and gleefully burst out, "Oh my god...are you pregnant!? Congratulations!" I just sat there aghast, as I am not nor have I ever been, for a sec and then responded, "Yah..sure am...*pointing at my drinks* Giving 'em a good start, eh?". The aforementioned person's eyes widened, they blushed, turned on their heels and skittered off....and left me chuckling.

  2. I dropped a metal double pointed needle in the middle of a classical music concert.

  3. I would say I was knitting in the dentist office while my son was in the back and when I looked up everyone sitting near me was looking at me!

    I just smiled at everyone!

  4. If the 3 of you guys could email me, that would be great!
